Berat Castle — A Fortress That Stayed a Neighborhood

Berat Castle, or Kalaja, looks like a hilltop fortress, but that description is incomplete. Its defensive origins reach back to antiquity, while much of the surviving fortification belongs to the medieval city rebuilt and strengthened over centuries. What makes Berat unusual is that the citadel never became only an archaeological zone. Houses, lanes, churches and mosque ruins remained woven into everyday life. UNESCO highlights this continuity as part of Berat’s significance. The walls therefore protected more than soldiers. They enclosed homes, workshops, worship and water storage. As you walk here, notice how little open parade-ground space exists. This is urban fabric compressed inside defenses. The castle tells the first rule of Berat: military architecture and ordinary life were never separate worlds.
