The Lead Mosque, named for the lead that once covered its dome, belongs to the sixteenth-century growth of Berat outside the fortified hill. Its location matters more than its nickname. By this period the city’s economic and administrative life was no longer contained by the castle. New religious buildings marked expanding neighborhoods along routes of trade and movement. The mosque’s broad dome and open setting contrast with the compressed lanes of the citadel. That architectural difference reflects urban change: a town once defined by defense was becoming a larger Ottoman commercial center. Ending here makes Berat’s development legible as movement downhill—from ancient and medieval fortification toward a more open early-modern city.
