Built in 1811–1812 for Beqir Zeko, an administrator associated with Ali Pasha’s government, Zekate House is one of Gjirokastër’s most imposing residences. Its paired towers are not random picturesque features. They advertise the resources of an elite household while giving the building defensive mass and commanding views. Inside, richly finished reception rooms contrast with utilitarian lower spaces. The house therefore operates on two scales: it is a machine for family life and a public statement about social position. Compared with Berat’s merchant fabric, Gjirokastër’s great houses reveal a more aristocratic urban order. UNESCO specifically highlights this distinction between the two World Heritage towns.
