Steiner Tor is the most prominent surviving city gate of Krems. Gates controlled movement, collected duties and marked the threshold between regulated urban space and roads beyond.
Its name points toward Stein, the neighbouring river town. Rather than imagine Krems as one isolated medieval centre, think of a commercial landscape stretching along the Danube, with gates and routes organising who and what could enter.
