Under National Socialism, Steyr’s armaments industry expanded within a system that used forced labour, including concentration-camp prisoners connected to the Mauthausen camp network.

This is not an incidental footnote to industrial success. Wartime output depended on coercion and lethal exploitation. Remembering that history prevents the city’s engineering tradition from being turned into a simple story of technological pride. Industrial capability can serve very different political systems, and technology does not decide the ethics of its own use.
