The luxury in front of you depends on someone feeding a fire you were not meant to admire.
The baths used HIGH-poh-kawst heating, furnaces, water supply and drainage systems. The modern reconstruction is fully functional and uses reconstructed Roman heating principles. In late antiquity parts of the heating and hot-water system were abandoned and some rooms changed use; parts of the area were eventually used for burials.
Look for service zones and imagine the labor, fuel and maintenance hidden behind the bathing experience.
