Domus Quarta: The Mosaic Is Ancient; Its Story Is Cautious

Domus Quarta contains a useful paradox. The building around you is only partly reconstructed, but its most spectacular feature — the floor mosaic — belongs to the ancient house and is displayed at its original location.
Preservation required intervention. The mosaic was lifted, restored, stabilised in a new support and then laid back where it had originally been found. “In situ” therefore does not mean untouched since antiquity. It means the object has been conserved and returned to the archaeological position that gives it meaning.
The size of the residence and the quality of the mosaic point to wealth. The mosaic room may have functioned as a representative dining room in the warmer part of the year. Notice the word “may”. Archaeologists can combine room proportions, decoration and parallels from other Roman houses, but a floor does not come with a surviving calendar saying “summer dinner here”. Good interpretation keeps the probability without pretending to have witnessed the meal.
The wider building also helps explain urban housing. Carnuntum had more than detached houses. Across the Roman world, multi-storey blocks and subdivided buildings could put several households on the same footprint, with comfort often decreasing on the upper levels. The surviving ground plan gives us only part of the vertical city that once existed.
So this stop asks you to separate three levels of certainty. The mosaic itself is ancient material. Its restored position is archaeologically documented. The precise social performance imagined for the room is an interpretation, plausible but not absolute. That is not a weakness. It is archaeology doing something more sophisticated than filling every blank: preserving what survives, rebuilding what can be defended, and leaving a little space for “we do not know”.
