Welcome to the Holy Monastery of Rila, a revered landmark in Bulgaria located deep within the Rila Mountains. As you ascend through the dense pine forests, the monastery appears majestically above, situated between the Rilska and Drushlyavitsa Rivers at an altitude of 1,147 meters.
This holy cloister was founded in the first half of the 10th century by St. Ivan of Rila, also known as St. John the Wonderworker. He was the first Bulgarian hermit to embrace monastic life here, and his legacy shaped the entire history of this site. Today, it remains a major pilgrimage destination.
The architecture you see today is largely Baroque in style, though earlier buildings from the 16th century survived a destructive fire in 1833. The complex includes several chapels, towers, and monasteries that house countless religious artifacts. The location we are at now marks the main entrance to the sanctuary, where the spiritual atmosphere has endured for over a millennium.
