The railway station is one of the most important historical sites in town because the Canadian Pacific Railway made Banff accessible to mass tourism.
CPR did more than carry passengers. It marketed the Rockies internationally, built grand hotels and promoted mountain scenery as proof that crossing Canada could be luxurious rather than exhausting.
The railway had national political importance as well. British Columbia's entry into Confederation had been tied to the promise of a transcontinental line.
Banff thus sits at the meeting point of nation-building and tourism marketing.
Railways also changed Indigenous landscapes by bringing permanent settlement, resource extraction and federal control more quickly into the region.
The station looks modest beside the mountains. Historically it was the machine that made the mountains economically legible to distant visitors.
Without the railway, early Banff tourism would have been a much smaller business.
