The Banff Springs Hotel is Canadian Pacific's grand statement that wilderness and luxury could be sold together.
An earlier hotel opened in 1888; the complex evolved through expansions, fire and rebuilding into the monumental building seen today.
Railway hotels were destination-makers. CPR did not wait for tourists to appear and then build accommodation. It built accommodation to create demand for railway travel.
The architecture borrowed romantic European forms that made the Rockies feel both exotic and civilized.
Legend note: the hotel has accumulated ghost stories, including tales of a spectral bride. These are hotel folklore, not documented historical events.
The factual story is stronger: a private railway company helped define what generations of visitors expected a Canadian national park to look like.
The hotel is not outside nature. It is part of the machinery through which nature became a national brand.
