The Bow River connects Banff to a much larger watershed and to Indigenous travel long before the town existed.
Modern Banff uses the river as scenic public space, but early settlement treated waterways as routes, barriers and sources of practical power.
The bridge links the commercial town to the administrative and hotel landscapes south of the river.
From here, look at how carefully views are managed. Streets terminate toward mountains. Open spaces frame the river. Building heights are controlled.
Banff is not a normal town that happens to sit inside a park. Its growth has been constrained by federal park policy for generations.
That creates constant tension over housing, tourism and conservation.
The view may feel effortless, but almost nothing about urban Banff is accidental. Even access to scenery is part of planning.
