This museum focuses on the cultures and histories of Indigenous peoples connected to the northern Plains and Rocky Mountain region.
Its presence is essential to any serious Banff guide because the national-park story was long told primarily through railway workers, mountaineers and federal conservation officials.
Indigenous relationships with these lands are far older than the park boundary.
The creation of Banff National Park restricted hunting, harvesting and ceremonial access, and early conservation policies often treated Indigenous presence as incompatible with wilderness.
That idea is now increasingly rejected.
A national park is not valuable because humans were absent. Banff is valuable partly because people maintained relationships with these ecosystems over very long periods.
Use this stop to reset the chronology. The railway is recent. The park is recent. The human history of the Bow Valley is not.
