Fan Tan Alley is famous for being extremely narrow. Its name recalls fan-tan, a Chinese gambling game, and the lane once served businesses and rooms tucked deep inside Chinatown's dense blocks.
Tourist storytelling often presents the alley as a mysterious den of gambling and opium. Those activities existed, but the exotic framing comes partly from a period when white newspapers portrayed Chinese neighbourhoods as inherently vice-ridden.
The same city tolerated gambling, alcohol and prostitution elsewhere while racializing them differently in Chinatown.
The alley's more important story is density. Narrow passages and internal courtyards allowed businesses, residences and association rooms to share expensive urban land.
Parks Canada identifies this network of alleys and passageways as a defining feature of Victoria's Chinatown.
Walk it as urban design rather than a crime-movie set. The narrowness is the real historical artifact.
