The Battery clings to the steep slopes near the entrance to St. John's harbour.
The neighbourhood's small houses and narrow paths reflect limited buildable land and a strong relationship with fishing and harbour work.
The colourful façades now make the area visually iconic, but this was not created as a scenic village for tourists.
Working-class harbour communities adapt to terrain rather than master it.
The Battery also sits beneath Signal Hill's military landscape. Residents lived in the shadow of fortifications, signal stations and guns that protected the harbour.
That proximity between domestic life and strategic infrastructure is characteristic of St. John's.
As you climb, pause and look back. The houses appear stacked because the slope is so severe.
Urban planners prefer grids. Newfoundland topography occasionally responds with laughter.
