The stone and timber warehouses of Historic Properties preserve the commercial waterfront of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Halifax merchants profited from Atlantic trade, including privateering during wars. Privateers were privately owned vessels authorized by government to capture enemy shipping. They were not pirates in the legal sense, although the distinction probably felt academic to anyone whose cargo they seized.
The warehouses handled fish, timber, rum and imported goods. Port wealth depended on sailors, dockworkers, merchants and imperial trade regulations.
Heritage redevelopment later turned these buildings into shops and restaurants.
The stone walls survive. The labouring atmosphere does not. Working ports smell, leak, shout and injure people. That gap is where interpretation has to work hardest.
