The spaces at Pier 21 worked in both directions. Canadian troops departed for Europe from Halifax, while war brides and displaced people later arrived.
The Second World War transformed the port into a military artery and then into a migration gateway for people rebuilding their lives.
Thousands of war brides—women who married Canadian servicemen overseas—moved to Canada after the war, often into communities they had never seen.
Their journeys complicate the language of immigration. Not every migrant moved primarily for work or persecution; family and military history could be equally powerful forces.
Halifax became a threshold rather than a final destination for many.
End the route by imagining the next step: a train leaving the coast for Montréal, Toronto, the Prairies or the Pacific. For millions, Canada began here and then immediately continued somewhere else.
