Fort Henry dominates the eastern side of Kingston Harbour.
The present fortress was built after the War of 1812 to protect the naval dockyard, the entrance to the Rideau Canal and the harbour from possible American attack.
Its artillery positions, dry ditches and casemated barracks represent the high point of smooth-bore fortress design in British North America.
The fort never fought the battle it was built for.
Later it served military and detention functions before becoming a major historic site.
Legend and pageantry can make Fort Henry feel like a stage set, especially during ceremonial demonstrations. The structure is genuine. The polished red-coat performance is interpretation.
