The museum stands on Lundy's Lane, away from the river's main tourist strip. That distance is useful because the city's history is larger than the Falls.
The surrounding area developed along an old transportation route that became the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the War of 1812.
The museum interprets local Indigenous history, settlement, war, tourism and community life.
Niagara Falls is often imagined as a destination without residents—almost a giant viewing platform with hotels attached. Local history corrects that.
People farmed, worked in factories, ran shops, raised families and lived beside an economy dominated by visitors.
Tourism towns still have ordinary civic lives.
The museum also prepares you for the final stop: a battlefield where neither side won a clean victory, despite generations of patriotic storytelling on both sides of the border.
