Nikola Tesla became one of the symbolic heroes of Niagara because his work on alternating-current motors and power systems helped make long-distance electrical transmission practical.
In 1896, power generated on the American side of Niagara was transmitted to Buffalo using AC technology associated with Tesla and Westinghouse.
The achievement mattered because electricity no longer had to be consumed almost beside the generator.
Legend correction: Tesla did not single-handedly “invent hydroelectricity at Niagara.” Hydropower was already being used locally, and the Niagara system depended on many engineers, companies, financiers and workers.
Tesla's contribution was enormous without needing mythology.
Monuments prefer individuals because a bronze person is easier to sculpt than a technological network.
Look back toward the river and mentally add everyone the statue cannot show: turbine designers, cable manufacturers, excavation crews, operators, investors and customers.
Modern infrastructure is collaborative even when memory is not.
