Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica is the oldest church in Ottawa and a major symbol of the city's French Catholic history.
Its location beside Lowertown reflects the Francophone population that grew with the canal, timber trade and regional settlement.
Ottawa's selection as capital partly rested on its position between English-speaking Ontario and French-speaking Quebec. That bilingual political symbolism was already visible socially in the city's churches, newspapers and neighbourhoods.
Catholic institutions provided education, charity and community organization, especially before modern welfare systems.
From here, Parliament is only minutes away, but the cultural landscape feels different. Canada's capital was never simply an English imperial outpost that later learned French. Francophone institutions were part of the city from its early growth.
