Sparks Street developed as one of Ottawa's principal commercial streets, lined with banks, shops, newspaper offices and hotels.
In 1967 it became one of North America's early permanent pedestrian malls.
That experiment reflected mid-century fears that downtown retail was losing to suburban shopping centres. Removing cars was supposed to make the street more attractive to pedestrians.
The results have always been debated. Government offices bring daytime populations but can leave the street quiet after work.
This is valuable urban history because not every experiment becomes a triumph. Cities test ideas, then spend decades arguing about whether they worked.
If Parliament is where Canada speaks officially, streets like this are where the unofficial version has always circulated faster.
