Toronto's famous flatiron building opened in 1892 as offices for the Gooderham family, whose wealth came from the Gooderham & Worts distillery.
Its narrow triangular shape was created by the street geometry rather than architectural whim. Wellington and Front converge here, and the building fills the awkward parcel with remarkable confidence.
The location mattered because Front Street had once faced the harbour more directly. Merchants and manufacturers wanted access to transport.
The building is often photographed as a charming survivor beneath skyscrapers. Historically it represented serious industrial capital.
The Gooderhams invested far beyond whisky, including banking and real estate. This little wedge is not a victim of modern Toronto. It is one of its ancestors.
