Stand in Place Royale and imagine the waterline much closer. In 1608 Samuel de Champlain established his habitation near here, but Québec existed for a larger reason: this was a strategic meeting point between a continental river system and the Atlantic.
French merchants sought furs; missionaries sought converts; officials sought territory. Indigenous nations already had diplomatic, trading and military networks, and New France survived only by entering those networks, sometimes as ally and sometimes as aggressor.
The square later became a commercial centre of Lower Town. Fire, bombardment and rebuilding changed its architecture repeatedly, so it is not a perfect seventeenth-century time capsule.
Old Québec is authentic not because every stone is original, but because the urban pattern and accumulated rebuilding still explain how a colonial port worked.
