Olomouc Town Hall has been the symbolic centre of municipal government for centuries, but the astronomical clock on its façade makes the building a particularly good lesson in political rewriting.
Astronomical clocks were prestigious urban technologies. They organised time, displayed knowledge and turned a town hall into a machine that could impress residents long before anyone had a smartphone to check whether it was running three minutes fast.
Olomouc's clock has medieval origins and was repeatedly altered. After damage during the Second World War, it was reconstructed in the late 1940s and 1950s in a socialist-realist style designed by Karel Svolinský. Instead of restoring a fantasy of the medieval original, the communist-era redesign placed workers, scientists and ordinary productive life into the visual programme.
That makes the clock controversial and excellent. Some visitors expect a Central European astronomical clock to look Gothic and vaguely alchemical. Olomouc gives them mosaics compatible with the ideology of the twentieth-century socialist state.
Preservation debates often ask which historical layer is 'authentic'. The clock shows why the question is difficult. A medieval mechanism repeatedly altered over centuries and rebuilt after wartime damage does not possess one untouched original moment waiting beneath the surface. The communist reconstruction is itself historical evidence.
Look for the relationship between the clock and Town Hall tower. Municipal authority uses time as a public service and a public performance. Medieval councils, Habsburg administrators and socialist officials all understood that.
The square around you also contained the routines of markets and civic ceremonies. Great political shifts arrived, but people still needed to meet, buy food and complain about local government.
