The cathedral’s dramatic staircase makes religion look almost theatrical, and that is not entirely accidental. Medieval churches were institutions of power, wealth and memory as well as places of worship. The present cathedral developed from earlier foundations on the hill and became the church of a collegiate chapter long before Erfurt again became a bishop’s seat in 1994.
Its famous bell, the Gloriosa, was cast in 1497 and remains one of the largest surviving medieval free-swinging bells. But the broader point is the setting: cathedral and Severikirche stand above a large square that turns architecture into civic scenery. Erfurt’s church institutions were physically woven into the commercial city below, yet elevated above it—an urban hierarchy expressed in stone and steps.
