The Petersberg Citadel began in the seventeenth century after the Electorate of Mainz reasserted control over Erfurt. In other words, the fortress was not simply built to protect the city from outsiders. It also helped a territorial ruler dominate the city itself.
That is a useful correction to the romantic idea of fortifications. Walls point in political directions. Mainz, Prussia, Napoleonic France and later German regimes all used this hill. Beneath the military layers lie traces of the earlier Benedictine monastery. The site therefore compresses a major transformation in European power: sacred hill, princely fortress, modern barracks, historical monument. From here, Erfurt’s roofs look peaceful. The architecture beneath your feet was designed because rulers did not assume peace would last.
