The Dominican Predigerkirche is associated with Meister Eckhart, the medieval theologian and mystic who studied, taught and held office in Erfurt. His writing can sound startlingly modern because he was interested in what happens when religious language reaches its limits: how do you speak about a God who cannot simply be described like an object?
Eckhart later faced accusations of heresy, and some propositions linked to his teaching were condemned after his death. That makes this church a useful counterpoint to the cathedral. Erfurt was not one religious voice speaking in unison. It contained competing orders, intellectual traditions and methods of preaching. The medieval city was a marketplace of ideas as well as goods.
