The Ruhr Museum occupies Zollverein’s former coal washery, a building once designed to separate, grade and prepare coal. Turning it into a regional museum is almost too perfect: a machine for processing geological material now processes memory.
The exhibitions connect deep geology with industrialisation, migration, labour and environmental change. That breadth matters because coal did not merely create jobs. It altered rivers, landscapes, settlement patterns and family histories. The museum’s location makes interpretation inseparable from the industrial fabric around it. You do not have to imagine the scale of the system; you are standing inside it.
