Villa Hügel was built in the 1870s for Alfred Krupp, head of the industrial dynasty whose steelworks became inseparable from Essen’s global reputation. The house is enormous, but its most revealing feature is its setting: a private estate removed from the dense industrial city that generated the family fortune.
Krupp produced railway material, machinery and armaments, and the company’s relationship with the German state became especially consequential in wartime. The villa therefore embodies both entrepreneurial power and the social distance industrial wealth could create. To understand Essen, you need to see both the mine and the mansion.
