The Obermarkt, or Upper Market, is a long urban room rather than a cute little square. That scale is evidence. Around the middle of the thirteenth century Görlitz expanded westward from the older Lower Market, and this became a new trading space aligned with the east-west axis of the Via Regia.
Stand where you can read the façades as a row. They do not belong to a single golden age. Fires, fashion, money and rebuilding repeatedly changed them. That is precisely why Görlitz is so useful: Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and nineteenth-century layers coexist closely enough that you can see prosperity being translated into new architectural languages.
The city also changed political masters without moving. Medieval Görlitz belonged to Upper Lusatia and was connected for long periods with the Bohemian Crown. It later passed through Saxon and Prussian rule. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the eastern part of Upper Lusatia including Görlitz became Prussian and was administratively tied to Silesia. So when people casually call Görlitz 'Saxon' today, they are correct about the modern federal state but incomplete historically.
This layered identity is not a trivia contest. It explains why the city does not fit a tidy national story. A merchant family here might have lived under different sovereigns while walking the same streets. Languages, confessions and administrative systems shifted around a built environment that endured.
Notice how the market naturally pulls your eye along its length. A commercial city designs movement into its public space. The square is wide because business needed room: carts, stalls, negotiations, ceremonies and crowds. Tourism now rewards the resulting beauty. Medieval merchants would probably be pleased that the real estate is still working, though possibly baffled by the quantity of outdoor coffee.
