Welcome to St. Mary's Cathedral, or the Mariendom, built between 1020 and 1025 during the Ottonian period. This Romanesque masterpiece stands as a symbol of Hildesheim's spiritual history.
Inside, you will notice the wooden ceiling and painted stucco-work that cover the interior walls. But perhaps the most famous feature here is the bronze column commissioned by Bishop Bernward around 1028. It depicts Christ in majesty standing on a globe, surrounded by the twelve apostles.
Nearby stands the magnificent tower known as Bishop Bernward's Tower, originally built between 1050 and 1060 and reconstructed after fires in 1852. At its base, you will find the famous bronze doors crafted in 1235 by Berthold of Moers. These heavy doors are covered in intricate Low German reliefs depicting biblical scenes, a unique artistic achievement from that era.
