Mariahilf stands above the Inn on the opposite side of the old town. The pilgrimage church became especially influential after devotion to its image of the Virgin spread through Central Europe. The phrase “Maria hilf”—Mary, help—became attached to Catholic identity during periods of war and confessional conflict.
The long covered pilgrims’ stairway turns the climb into ritual movement. Looking back toward the old town, you can see why Passau’s sacred geography extends beyond the cathedral. Pilgrimage connected the bishop’s city to much wider devotional networks across Bavaria, Austria and the Habsburg lands.
