Niedernburg’s importance reaches far beyond its quiet appearance. The convent was an influential religious institution, and its church contains the tomb of Gisela of Hungary, widow of King Stephen I and a key figure in the Christianisation story of medieval Hungary.
Her presence here is a reminder that Passau was tied into networks running down the Danube toward Central Europe. The river was not a boundary; it was a corridor. Pilgrims, clergy, dynastic connections and trade linked Bavaria with lands that later became Austria and Hungary. A small convent stop therefore opens onto a much larger map.
