In summer 1945, Cecilienhof became the meeting place for Stalin, Truman and Churchill, later replaced at the conference by Clement Attlee. Germany had surrendered in Europe, but the war against Japan continued and the Allied powers were already confronting the problems of the postwar order.
Decisions and declarations associated with the Potsdam Conference dealt with occupation, borders, demilitarisation and the future of Germany. The setting is strikingly domestic for such enormous questions. A palace built for the last German crown prince became a conference venue where the victorious Allies discussed the dismantling of the system that had followed the monarchy.
