Speyer Cathedral was founded by Emperor Conrad II in the eleventh century and became one of the great architectural statements of the Salian dynasty. Its scale was political. The building proclaimed imperial authority at a time when emperors and popes contested who held ultimate power in Christian Europe.
Several emperors and kings were buried here, turning the crypt into a dynastic memory chamber. The cathedral’s later history includes fire, destruction and restoration, yet its Romanesque mass still communicates the original ambition. This was not merely a large church. It was monarchy made architectural.
