The Juliusspital was founded in 1576 by Prince-Bishop Julius Echter as a hospital and charitable institution. Its endowment eventually included extensive vineyards, which is why one of Germany’s best-known wine estates is attached to a medical foundation.
This combination can seem odd only if we separate categories that early modern institutions did not. Land, agriculture and wine generated income; that income financed care. The foundation also became important in medical education. Walk through the complex and remember that charitable systems require economic machinery. Würzburg’s wine culture was never only about pleasure. Here, vineyards were part of a long-term financial model for welfare.
