The Museum of Human Evolution opened in 2010 to interpret discoveries from the Atapuerca archaeological sites east of Burgos. Those sites preserve evidence of human occupation reaching deep into prehistory and have transformed scientific debate about early populations in Europe.
The museum deliberately connects a modern provincial capital with research happening outside its historic centre. Fossils, stone tools and reconstructed environments require different evidence from cathedral chronicles or medieval charters.
That change of scale is valuable. Burgos’s history does not begin with Castile. Human presence in the region stretches back vastly further than the institutions that gave the city its name and monuments.
