The brightly painted houses along the Onyar now function as Girona’s visual signature, but riverfronts were historically practical and messy. Buildings turned backs, workshops and service spaces toward water because rivers carried waste, goods and energy as well as scenery.
The Rambla de la Llibertat on the old-town side developed as a commercial promenade over earlier urban fabric. Together, river and promenade show a shift from working edge to representational centre.
This is a useful local story because heritage branding can make landscapes look inevitable. Girona’s postcard view emerged from centuries of ordinary building, sanitation changes and selective restoration.
