Construction of the present cathedral began in the thirteenth century, using French Gothic models to create unusually large areas of stained glass. The walls are comparatively light because stone structure and flying buttresses carry loads that earlier churches kept in thicker masonry.
That ambition brought vulnerability. Structural problems required major interventions, especially in the nineteenth century, when architects dismantled and rebuilt parts of the building in an effort to stabilize and restore it.
So the famous glass is not simply medieval survival. León Cathedral is also a history of conservation: generations deciding how much alteration is acceptable when preserving a fragile masterpiece.
