The diamond-shaped stone points on this façade make Casa de los Picos easy to remember, but its location is the more important clue.
The house stands beside the former Puerta de San Martín, once a major entrance into the walled city. A prominent noble residence here controlled visibility on the route used by merchants, officials and royal visitors moving toward the centre.
Its fortified appearance sits between medieval defence and Renaissance display. The façade communicates wealth by making stone itself ornamental.
Calle Real, the route continuing uphill, was not merely a picturesque shopping street. It was the ceremonial and commercial spine between the aqueduct and the royal quarter. Casa de los Picos marks the point where movement through the city became political theatre: architecture told arrivals who mattered before anyone needed to say it.
