The most impressive part of Segovia’s aqueduct is only the visible finale of a much longer water system. From its source in the Guadarrama area, the conduit runs for more than sixteen kilometres before crossing this low point on granite arches.

The monumental section was assembled from large granite blocks without mortar. Stability comes from weight, friction and the geometry of the arches. Water travelled in a channel at the top, moving by gravity with a carefully controlled gradient.

Before reaching the city, settling tanks helped remove suspended material. Inside the walls, much of the channel ran underground and distributed water to fountains and cisterns.

The date is still discussed in detail, but current scholarship places construction in the early second century AD, around the reigns of Trajan or Hadrian. The useful point is not the emperor’s name. It is that Roman Segovia solved a basic urban problem—how to deliver clean water to a defensible high settlement—so effectively that the system remained useful for centuries.
