The circus hosted chariot racing, but much of its seating and circulation infrastructure became embedded in later Tarragona. The so-called Praetorium preserves Roman fabric that was converted into a medieval castle, military barracks and prison.
That biography is precisely why labels can mislead. Visitors may expect one building from one era, while the structure is actually a stack of adaptations around Roman concrete and stone.
Circus vaults survived because they were useful. They supported streets and houses long after racing ended. Archaeology here is not the recovery of an empty ruin; it is the reading of ancient engineering inside a continuously inhabited city.
