Notre-Dame d’Amiens was largely built in the thirteenth century and is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in France. Its height and vast interior were achieved through pointed arches, rib vaults and flying buttresses that channel loads outward and downward.
The west façade is dense with sculpture because a cathedral taught through images as well as sermons. Inside, the choir stalls and labyrinth belong to later phases, reminding us that construction and use continued long after the main shell rose.
The cathedral is impressive not because medieval builders ignored engineering limits, but because they understood them well enough to push them.
