Central Bayeux escaped the level of destruction suffered by Caen, Saint-Lô and many other Norman towns in 1944. That survival is why medieval and early-modern street patterns remain so visible today.
It would be misleading to say Bayeux was untouched: the region experienced occupation, fighting, military traffic and casualties. But the historic centre’s physical survival made the town immediately useful after liberation for hospitals, administration and press activity.
The absence of ruins is therefore historical evidence too. Sometimes what did not happen to a city determines its postwar identity as strongly as destruction elsewhere.
