Metz as a city repeatedly translated by politics: Roman and episcopal origins, an autonomous medieval civic tradition, French takeover, the annexation to the German Empire after 1870, return to France in 1918, renewed German annexation under Nazism and liberation in 1944. Architecture becomes the evidence, especially the Imperial Quarter built to make German rule visible.
