Rouen became the capital of the Norman duchy created around the Viking leader Rollo, grew into a major medieval and Renaissance commercial city, witnessed Joan of Arc’s condemnation and execution in 1431, industrialised along the Seine and suffered severe wartime destruction. This route follows how each reinvention reused the previous city rather than replacing it cleanly.
