This pedestrian bridge is one of the simplest pieces of infrastructure on the walk and one of the most politically loaded.
At the end of the Second World War, retreating German forces destroyed the bridges across the Neisse on 7 May 1945. The old city west of the river escaped widespread destruction, but the river soon acquired an entirely new role. The post-war settlement placed the German-Polish border along the Oder and Lusatian Neisse. Görlitz was divided. The eastern districts became Polish Zgorzelec.
The population history on both sides changed dramatically. Germans east of the new frontier were expelled or fled; Polish settlers arrived, many from central Poland and from former Polish eastern territories incorporated into the Soviet Union. Saying simply that 'the city became Polish on one side' is administratively true and humanly inadequate. People were moved through a Europe whose borders had been redrawn after genocidal war and occupation.
During the Cold War, crossing was controlled and at times difficult. The symbolism of today's bridge therefore lies less in its engineering than in its ordinariness. You can walk across it. Germany and Poland are both in the European Union and Schengen area, so the frontier that once severed everyday urban life is now normally crossed without routine passport checks.
Do not turn that into a sentimental claim that history has been solved. National politics still matter; language changes as you cross; institutions and memories remain different. Cooperation is impressive precisely because difference persists.
Pause near the middle if it is safe. Look upstream and downstream. There is no natural sign in the water saying 'Germany' on one half and 'Poland' on the other. Political geography is real, but it is made by people. Few places demonstrate that more efficiently than a bridge in a city that acquired an international border overnight.
