Begin in the market because royal history is only half of Quedlinburg. A court can make a place important, but merchants and craftspeople make it function on Tuesday morning.
The market settlement developed west and north of the castle hill and became a prosperous trading town. UNESCO stresses the way separate early settlements eventually combined into the urban fabric preserved today. That growth pattern is easier to understand here than in cities whose medieval cores were later replaced by broad boulevards.
Look around the square at the Town Hall and surrounding façades. The buildings belong to different centuries, but the market's spatial logic is older: exchange needs a recognised centre, and a recognised centre eventually attracts regulation. Medieval towns developed systems for weights, measures, tolls, courts and guild life because trade without rules quickly becomes theft with paperwork.
Quedlinburg's relationship with the royal and ecclesiastical community on the hill was not simply one of obedience. Townspeople, abbesses, rulers and later territorial powers negotiated rights and responsibilities over generations. Medieval urban politics often consisted of overlapping jurisdictions rather than one clean chain of command.
The square also begins our warning against 'medieval Disneyland'. Timber-framed architecture survived here in extraordinary quantity, but much of what visitors admire dates from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. UNESCO specifically notes a major building boom during and after the Thirty Years' War. In other words, the historic centre is not a single preserved medieval stage set. It is an archive of continuous building.
That makes the town more interesting. A perfect reconstruction would tell you what one moment looked like. Quedlinburg tells you how people kept adapting the same streets for hundreds of years.
