Porta Praetoria preserves part of the northern gate of Castra Regina, the Roman legionary fortress established under Emperor Marcus Aurelius in 179 CE.
The fortress housed Legio III Italica and anchored Roman control along the Danube frontier. A civilian settlement developed around military infrastructure.
Later buildings absorbed the Roman masonry, which helped it survive until antiquarians recognised and exposed it more clearly.
This is a recurring Regensburg pattern: old fabric survives because the city keeps using the site.
The Roman frontier was not simply a wall separating civilisation from barbarians. It was a zone of trade, migration, military movement and cultural exchange.
Borders become most interesting when people keep crossing them despite the paperwork.
