The Cathedral of St James was built across the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries by several masters, most famously Juraj Dalmatinac and Nikola Firentinac. Large sections were assembled from precisely cut stone elements without relying on a conventional timber roof structure.
The exterior frieze of carved human heads is one of its most distinctive features, though identifying them as specific contemporary citizens is more speculative than popular retellings sometimes suggest.
The cathedral represents more than church patronage. Under Venetian sovereignty, Šibenik’s civic elite invested in a building sophisticated enough to compete culturally with larger Adriatic cities.
